Florida Hit-and-run Collisions Rose Sharply in 2021
According to a news story on The Independent Florida Alligator, Florida’s Hit-and-run Awareness Month began with heart-breaking news about the number of fatal hit-and-run crashes in Florida last year. According to the report, fatal hit-and-run crashes have been steadily rising in the state of Florida since 2018. A new report states that 2021 saw a 17% increase in the number of hit-and-run collisions. 2021 also had an 18% increase in the number of fatalities over 2020. Approximately 70% of hit-and-run fatalities in 2021 were cyclists or pedestrians, according to FLHSMV’s media release.
The City of Gainesville has had multiple pedestrian deaths in recent years. With so many student deaths, student organizations such as Florida Not One More, help persuade government officials to lower the speed limits on streets entering the city.

FLHSMV Executive Director Terry Rhodes stated in the media release that drivers who flee an accident scene with injuries, property damage, or death are breaking the law and have shown disregard for the properties and lives of others.
The Florida Highway Patrol works with Crime Stoppers of Florida to encourage people to report crimes anonymously to law enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Patrick Riordan stated. He also believes that the agency is fully aware of the problem and is working hard to solve the issue. The Florida Highway Patrol encourages tips because most hit-and-run cases remain open.
