Escambia County Ranks in Top 25 Florida Counties for Pedestrian Collisions
According to a news report posted on yahoo.com, a 20-year-old Pensacola woman struck and killed a pedestrian on U.S. 29 in Escambia County, Florida. Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputies are running an outreach program to prevent similar tragedies from happening again. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is conducting high-visibility enforcement operations in various locations throughout Escambia County to educate drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians on traffic safety.
According to Lieutenant Patrick Frazier, these collisions often occur when people are crossing the road and are not using a crosswalk or wearing reflective clothing.
Lieutenant Frazier reported that the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office received $45,055 in grants from the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation. The initiative will increase awareness and compliance with traffic laws. The money will be used to pay overtime for officers and cover the cost of bicycle light installations and educational materials
..."Pedestrian collisions often occur when people are crossing the road and are not using a crosswalk or wearing reflective clothing."
The Florida Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Programs Manager, Mike Lewis, says the intention is to raise awareness of personal safety at the most dangerous times and in the most dangerous locations, as indicated by crash data.
Escambia County received the funding due to its top 25 ranking for pedestrian collisions. Escambia, Bay, and Leon counties offer the best opportunity for improvement when it comes to pedestrian crashes.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were almost 6,000 bicycle accidents in Florida in 2020. 170 of those accidents were fatal crashes.
People can do some simple things to increase their safety on the streets. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, and bicyclists ride with traffic. Cyclists should also have lights on their bikes.
