How to Tell if Your Vehicle has a Dangerous Defect

How can you tell if your car has been recalled by the manufacturer?

Most motor vehicles change owners several times over the life of the vehicle. Car dealerships typically offer car-buying incentives and short-term leases to keep prospective car buyers coming to their car lots. When new car dealers take in trades, the vehicles are usually auctioned off to used car dealers. This creates a potentially dangerous situation when a customer unknowing purchases a vehicle that may have an outstanding and unrepaired recall.

..."By law, automakers must notify the initial buyer or initial lessee of a vehicle that has been recalled. Although most states do require car owners to update their motor vehicle registrations, the system has been largely ineffective in contacting owners of recalled used vehicles."

By law, automakers must notify the initial buyer or initial lessee of a vehicle that has been recalled. Although most states do require car owners to update their motor vehicle registrations, the system has been largely ineffective in contacting owners of recalled used vehicles. Moreover, car manufacturers and auto dealerships are not required by law to follow the chain of title to warn owners of a recall. Fortunately, the U.S. government has developed a resource to help vehicle owners find out if their vehicle is part of a recall. On SafeCar.gov, visitors may search their vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see which recalls their vehicle has on file. Your motor vehicle’s VIN has seventeen numbers and is located on parts throughout your vehicle. The most convenient location to read your vehicle’s VIN is on the dash on the driver’s side.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safercar.gov website contains an enormous amount of vehicle safety information. You also have the option of registering your car on the website to receive email notifications when your vehicle has a manufacturer recall.
