Motorcycle Accidents Are Often Caused by Car and Truck Drivers

Our Florida Motorcycle Accident Lawyers report that a study has found that most severe motorcycle accidents are caused by car and truck drivers.

According to an article posted on sun-sentinel.com, motorcycle riders are usually injured by people driving cars and trucks.  The report states that the growing number of motorcycle accidents is mostly due to distracted drivers using their cell phones.

Most motor vehicle drivers blame motorcyclists for causing accidents.  Car and truck drivers blame reckless motorcycle operators for causing accidents because they careen in and out of traffic and put their own lives at risk of a severe or deadly motorcycle crash.

One person quoted in the news article stated that motorcycle riders always ask motorists to watch out for them, but they are always cutting in and out of traffic.

..."The growing number of motorcycle accidents is mostly due to distracted drivers using their cell phones. "

The Sun-Sentinel decided to answer once and for all who causes motorcycle accidents between four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles crash.  According to a Florida Department of Transportation report, motorists driving trucks and cars are mostly to blame for motorcycle accidents involving four-wheeled vehicles.  The most common cause of motorcycle accidents includes “failing to yield the right of way.”

A study by Chanyoung Lee, a senior researcher at the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research, analyzed ten years of Florida motorcycle accidents and discovered that 60% of the time, car or truck drivers were at fault when they collided with motorcycles.  Mr. Lee also stated that there is a bias by people who are driving four-wheel vehicles that they do not expect to see motorcycles on the road.

According to the study, 34% of motorcycle accidents involve only the motorcycle.  So motorcyclists are urged to take motorcycle safety courses to help prevent single-motorcycle accidents.  These accidents are usually the result of a motorcyclist not properly navigating a turn in the road.

Lee, who also works for FDOT’s Motorcycle Safety Coalition, said that motorcyclists need to know that they have a good chance of crashing their motorcycle due to their own errors.  Mr. Lee stated that about 50% of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve the motorcycle and no other motor vehicle.

In severe, fatal motorcycle accidents involving several vehicles, the cause is usually the drivers of four-wheeled vehicles, and most motorcycle collisions involve other vehicles.  Those accidents typically involve drivers trying to make a left turn, and they pull out in front of motorcycles traveling straight.  One of the main issues is that drivers in cars and trucks do not see the approaching motorcycle due to the motorcycle’s smaller profile.

The Florida Department of Transportation understands that the most significant cause of motorcycle accidents is drivers not seeing the motorcycles and pulling out in front of them.  So FDOT has been running “Look Twice for Motorcycles” campaigns to alert drivers to the presence of motorcycles.  Motorcyclists should also try to make themselves more visible to motorists.  FDOT believes that its safety campaign has made a difference in preventing serious accidents and injury.

Most of Florida’s motorcycle accidents transpire in March because there are more motorcycles on the road in March than any other month.
